“Happy Tears” is Parker Posey, Demi Moore and Rip Torn’s newest movie. This movie is from the perspective of Posey’s character Jayne as she returns to the home she grew up in to help take care of her father who suffers from dementia. When she gets to the house her sister Laura (
The movie is about the struggle of the two sisters as they take care of their ill father. While doing this Jayne comes to understand things in her past that Laura was protecting her from. She also finds a way to come to terms with things that are happening in her adult life.
This is an artistic film that has scenes that make little sense. The scenes that were the most artistic and painful to watch were shown as the weird daydreams Jayne has as she spaces out. There are also many things that were shown that didn’t need to ever be seen on a big screen. Among these things was a scene early in the movie were Joe, Jayne and Laura’s father, (Torn) soiled himself, and Jayne and Laura are shown cleaning him. To give the movie some credit they did make a story that hasn’t been shown in this way.
The only thing I found good about the movie is the acting itself. Each of the actors plays their parts extremely well. However, the characters that they played are unlikeable.
Jayne for example is the type of person who only sees what she wants to see and doesn’t look to deeply at how things really are. Jayne is also a very prissy person who can’t deal with problems.
Then there is Laura who cares little for the past. She also seems to care little for her father even though she is taking the time to help for him. To me this is the most believable character because she states things as they are. I feel that the movie needed more of this character to ground the story.
This movie was hard to watch. To be more exact I would say it was painful to watch. There are a few scenes that were a nice break from the pain but they ended too quickly. With unlikeable characters and scenes that may you question what the director was on while making this movie it is not a movie I would recommend going to see.
